New $30.2 Million School to Enhance Learning and Sustainability |
Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) has commenced construction on the new Okolona Elementary School, marking a significant investment in the community's educational infrastructure.
The upcoming 80,330-square-foot facility, situated adjacent to Okolona Park, is designed to provide a modern and energy-efficient learning environment.
Scheduled for completion in summer 2027, the school will feature a central commons area, flexible classrooms filled with natural light, and dedicated spaces for collaboration and creativity.
Emphasizing sustainability, the building will incorporate geothermal heating and cooling systems, LED lighting, and water-saving fixtures to reduce environmental impact and operational costs.
Principal April Hetzel expressed enthusiasm, stating, "The new Okolona Elementary represents our commitment to future-ready learning spaces that meet the needs of our students and community."
Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood highlighted the project's alignment with JCPS's broader vision, noting, "This school is designed for the way students learn today. It supports collaboration, safety, and sustainability."
Despite a $188 million budget deficit, JCPS officials clarified that the building fund remains unaffected, ensuring the continuation of this and other planned projects.
In addition to the new elementary school, the Okolona community has seen recent developments, including the dedication of a new playground at Hartstern Elementary and the introduction of a tuition-free preschool through a partnership with LDG Development and Bezos Academy.
These initiatives collectively aim to enhance educational opportunities and resources for families in the area. |
